Why Tiro

Named after the first shorthand writer

Marcus Tullius Tiro was Cicero's secretary. Tradition credits him with a system of abbreviations — the Tironian notes — that let him write down speeches as fast as Cicero spoke them.

Monks and scribes kept using it for centuries. One of its signs, the one for “and”, still appears on road signs in Ireland today: it's the stroke in our logo.

Tiro does the same with your voice: it listens and puts it in writing.

Is Tiro free?

You start with 30 free minutes of transcription, no card needed. To keep transcribing you can subscribe to Pro inside the app, and cancel any time from your Apple ID settings.

Why is it called HiText on the App Store?

Tiro is HiText's new name, and we're rolling it out step by step. Until then you'll see it as HiText on the App Store and on your iPhone: same app, same account, same subscription.

Which files can I transcribe?

Audio (MP3, M4A, WAV) and video (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WMV) up to 2 GB, recordings made in the app, voice notes shared from WhatsApp and YouTube links.

Which languages does it support?

It transcribes 13 audio languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and German, and can detect the language automatically. You can read the translation in 15 languages.

How do I transcribe a WhatsApp voice note?

In WhatsApp, press and hold the voice note, tap Forward, then the share icon, and choose HiText (Tiro's name on your iPhone for now). The transcript appears in the app.

Does it work on Android or on the web?

Tiro is available for iPhone and iPad.

What happens to my recordings?

Your audio is processed on our servers only to transcribe and summarize it. You can read the details in our privacy policy.
